ACROSS THE BAY OF BENGAL: SECURING A HIGH-RISK MARITIME OPERATION

Some security assignments begin where conventional security ends. When Abdul Monem Ltd. required security support for 35 lighterage vessels transporting imported raw sugar to its refinery, Elite Force undertook a maritime escort operation that extended from the high seas into Bangladesh's river routes. The assignment demanded more than a visible security presence. It required careful coordination, personnel prepared for challenging conditions and continuous attention to risks throughout the journey.

The vessels were transporting raw sugar imported from Brazil and discharged from the mother vessel MV Calypso Colossus, anchored near the Kutubdia Channel. From there, the lighterage vessels travelled through routes including Sandwip, Hatia, Chandpur, Kaliganj, Sonargaon and Narayanganj toward the client's sugar refinery. The route presented significant operational challenges. The existing Elite Force account describes risks of robbery, theft and attacks by unauthorized individuals, alongside rough weather and demanding conditions at sea. The mission required personnel who could remain vigilant while operating in an environment far removed from conventional security posts.

Elite Force assigned a dedicated escort contingent to the operation, including armed personnel and escorts, with a focus on protecting the vessels throughout their movement. Personnel were selected with consideration for their familiarity with seafaring conditions. The operation also maintained contact with relevant Coast Guard, River Police and District Police authorities to seek assistance when required. Rather than relying on a fixed security position, the team had to adapt its approach to the movement of each vessel and the changing conditions along the route.

Security at sea and along river routes presents challenges that differ considerably from protecting a building or facility. Personnel must remain alert in changing weather, work within the constraints of vessel movement and maintain awareness of potential threats over extended journeys. In this assignment, the combination of escort personnel, route awareness and coordination with relevant authorities formed part of the security approach described by Elite Force. The experience also demonstrated the importance of selecting personnel suited to the specific demands of an operation.

Elite Force's published account describes the mission as progressing successfully, with appreciation from the contracting client. Beyond the immediate assignment, the operation added to the organization's experience in maritime and river escort services—an area where conventional security arrangements may not be sufficient on their own. It reinforced a central principle of specialized security: effective protection depends on understanding the environment, preparing for its challenges and adapting to the needs of the mission.

Elite Force has also described experience escorting vessels carrying clinker and salt between Chattogram, Narayanganj, and Mongla, extending its work into demanding maritime and river environments. These assignments reflect a broader approach to security—one that goes beyond guarding a fixed location and responds to the specific requirements of people, assets, and operations in motion. Because when valuable cargo is on the move, security must move with it.
